You guys have really underestimated Trump voters and you do so to your electoral peril. The smartest and most intellectually curious people I know voted for Trump. There is an idiological purity test on the left now that is bordering on a clinically identifiable pathology. They have streamlined your thoughts to the point that as a conservative, I can argue with 20 people on the left and they all make the exact same arguments, using the exact same talking points, sticking to the exact same script. That used to be the way it was with Republicans, but the paradigm has shifted. I voted for Al Gore, John Kerry, Obama twice, yet I went for Trump this election. If you guys are hoping to win in 2018/2020 I’m precisely the kind of voter that you need to win back. Thus far, I haven’t seen anything on the left that has wanted to make me come back home. But go for it, tell me how much of a racist I am, tell me how I have a fifth grade reading level, and see how that works out. A little introspection goes a long way. And you can’t defeat an enemy that you don’t understand, and take it for me, you don’t understand your perceived “enemies” aka, your former Countrymen.
